STRUCTURAL DESIGN SERVICES
DMWPV offers full structural design services through all phases of design, documentation and construction. Schematic Design, Preliminary Design, Construction Documents (working drawings and specifications), Value Engineering, Bid Assistance, Construction Contract Administration (review of submittals, attend construction meetings, observe (in general) the status, quality, workmanship and conformance to contract documents) and Structural and Special Inspections.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
Computer generated documentation is being accomplished utilizing Revit as our sole platform. This includes simple report sketches, full construction documents and integration with full Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM provides 2D or 3D modeling of all the building systems, components and information. BIM creates an atmosphere of multi-discipline collaboration and coordination between the structural generated information and the extended project team members – architects, MEP engineers, contractors and owners.
Revit is directly linked with our design analysis programs such as RAM Structural System and RISA. Revit can be exported to other file formats, such as AutoCAD, based on the team’s usage and needs.
LEED certification verifies that a building was designed using criteria aimed at achieving high performance in areas of human and environmental health.
We have LEED Accredited Professional, Building Design and Construction staff.
In addition to preparing documents for LEED certification, we incorporate Sustainable (Green Building) Design philosophies in our structural practice, during the preparation and development of construction documents for our building construction projects.
Sustainable structural considerations:
- the use of fly ash to replace Portland cement (cement production creates high carbon dioxide emissions).
- the use of recycled structural steel (95% recycled content); Steel deck (66% recycled content); reinforcing steel 66% recycled content).
- the use of sustainably harvested wood from environmentally, responsibly managed forests.
- the choice of locally available resources.
SPECIALTY ENGINEERING FOR CONTRACTORS AND SUB-CONTRACTORS
Structural Steel Connection Design for Steel Fabricators
DMWPV can provide steel connection design services to steel fabricators. On projects where DMWPV is the Structural Engineer of Record, we do not delegate design of structural steel connections to the fabricator. For the projects where the fabricator has been delegated the responsibility for the design of the steel connections, and DMWPV is not the Structural Engineer of Record, we can provide the design services to the fabricator. These design services can include design of ordinary member to member/bracing/moment/truss/extended shear plate connections, column splices, and railing connections. We will review and seal steel shop drawings for proper incorporation of the supplied design data, where required, and prepare or review and seal temporary bracing plans where required.
Engineering Assistance Services During Demolition, Erection, and Construction
During demolition, erection and construction DMWPV can provide assistance to contractors and sub-contractors relative to means and methods, procedures and sequencing, where DMWPV is not the Structural Engineer of Record.
- Temporary bracing and shoring of wall, floor and roof structures during demolition, to provide stability when vertical and lateral support is removed.
- Temporary bracing and shoring structures under construction until the permanent vertical and lateral bracing elements have been installed.
- Sequence of demolition and erection so that adequate vertical and lateral support will be maintained.
- Analyze floor and roof structures (with alterations if required) to determine structural adequacy to support construction equipment and materials.
- Crane operation during erection of structural steel, precast concrete, mechanical equipment and to relocate structures – such as industrial towers and industrial equipment.
- Crane placement and path of travel.
- Boom direction, travel and loads.
- Evaluate soil and structures for load mats to support crane, equipment and outriggers loads.
- Design and detail rigging, lifting devices and spreader beams.
STRUCTURAL RENOVATION PROJECTS
We provide structural engineering services to Architects, Owners and Contractors for building renovation projects:
- Review of existing as-built documents.
- Observation and investigation of existing buildings.
Observe existing structural elements to confirm as-builts. Document structural deficiencies.
- Analyze the existing structural elements and prepare construction documents and provide construction administration services for repair and alteration documents for deficient structural elements and for new construction and additions.
- Change in use and occupant load.
- Vibration and deflection requirements for occupant comfort and sensitive equipment requirements.
- High density shelving and filing systems.
- Partition changes.
- Floor and ceiling finishes.
- Green roof systems, including growing medium and vegetation.
- Ponding water.
New Wall Openings:
Added vertical support for structure over new opening.
Effect on lateral stability of remaining structural to sustain wind and seismic loads.
Removal of Columns: to create open areas.
Removal of Floor and Roof Areas: to create atriums, added stair and elevators, and new equipment and ducts.
Added Elements Affecting Lateral Stability:
Effect of added projected wind area of parapets and mechanical screen walls and the seismic effect of any added construction mass on the lateral stability of the structure.

STRUCTURAL CONDITION ASSESSMENT AND REHABILITATION
Investigation of existing structures, to determine structural deficiencies; development of construction documents to repair and rehabilitate the existing structural elements; and construction administration during repair.
Investigate, observe, photograph and document deficiencies that effect the structural elements. Identify the signs of distress; determine the causes; analyze for required strength and capacity; and develop repair procedures.
Structural damage and deficiencies can be caused by:
- Corrosion and decay of wood, concrete and steel due to moisture intrusion.
- Weathering and freeze/thaw damage.
- Insect infestation
- Foundation and slab-on-grade settlement.
- Fire, Wind and seismic activity.
- Overload created by user – vehicle collision; exceeding load capacity; high density files.
- Inadequate initial design and detailing, and inadequate maintenance.
- Replacement and/or strengthening of wood and steel joist, beam, column and truss members.
- Patching and repairs of concrete delamination and spalling caused by freeze/thaw damage and by moisture and chloride intrusion which induces rusting and expansion of the embedded reinforcing steel (Partner Kenneth J. Pittman is a founding member of the local International Concrete Repair Institute Chapter).
- Remove and reinstall or replace veneer materials, due to anchorage failures – brick, limestone, marble, granite and precast concrete panels.
- Underpinning settled and overloaded foundations with conventional poured spread footing foundation and/or screw type (such as Helical piles) piers.
- Pressure grouting of settled slabs.
- Brick repair and/or replacement and addition of control/expansion joints to brick damage caused by unrelieved expansion of the masonry.
- Application of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) for reinforcement of structurally deficient masonry, concrete, steel and timber structures.
- Add supplemental support and/or strengthening of structural members due to overload, damage or deficiencies.
