Indoor Athletic Facilities
The Recreation/Convocation Center provides 173,000 SF of space devoted to student and faculty recreation and wellness, including components capable of facilitating an expanded recreation program and most of VCU’s assembly, convocational, and athletic needs. The recreation component of the project includes a weight room, an aerobics room, a recreational gymnasium, lockers and equipment rooms, a wellness center, a lounge, and a student computer/study room. The events component of the project includes a highly flexible, multi-purpose arena seating up to 7,500 quests. The Arena, with its related support functions, can host University basketball games, concerts, lectures, convocations, and other major University functions. When not in use for such events, the Arena space will be used for recreation activities. The movable seating in this component can be retracted, exposing an additional five recreation courts.
The 160,000 SF Sports/Fitness/Convocation facility is an addition to the existing 30,000 SF multi-purpose recreation center. The new addition includes a multi-purpose gymnasium with three basketball courts, natatorium, locker rooms, training room, laundry facilities, storage facilities, wellness center, indoor track, toilets, concessions, ticket office, press/conference room and administrative offices. Seating Capacity: 2,816.

This recreation center has a 2-court gymnasium, a Multi-Activity Court gymnasium, a fitness center with 30’ climbing wall, 3 multi-purpose rooms for aerobics, 2 racquetball courts, suspended running track with suspended lounge area inside the track, juice bar, medical clinic, offices, locker rooms, storage, etc.
68,769 SF convocation center. Building includes new performance court for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball with telescoping seats and handicapped seating areas for approximately 2,000. When retracted, the seats expose 4 half-court practice courts. Other components of the center include a spectator lobby, President’s Suite, recruiting lounge, concessions, restrooms, visitors/officials locker rooms, and storage areas. The convocation center connects to the existing Goolrick Hall (gymnasium/natatorium) and the existing Fitness Center.
Sports and recreation center contains a natatorium, field house, suspended jogging track, racquetball and squash courts, weight rooms, wellness center, lounge, locker rooms for men and women and for faculty men and faculty women, supporting storage and maintenance rooms.
Addition and renovation to existing historic Cary Street Gymnasium includes racquetball courts, a natatorium with leisure and lap pools, locker facilities, 4-court gymnasium with 3-lane running track above, large climbing wall, aerobics/exercise rooms, a multi-activity court gymnasium and offices.
Addition to the existing recreation facilities includes recreation space, student services space and dining space for the Medical Campus. Features include aerobic/exercise rooms, offices, approximately 10,000 SF of fitness and weight training space, a dining services marketplace, student services offices and meeting rooms.
